August 12 breakfast delves into dropout statistics, career technical education, demand for college degrees and education’s role in local workforce development
NORTH COUNTY; July 24, 2008 – The Leadership North County Alumni Group’s August 12 Momentum Breakfast features a panel of experts in education trends affecting North San Diego County and will be held at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way, in Oceanside from 7 to 9 a.m. Tickets are $20 for members and $30 for non-members. Visit www.lncalumni.org for details and purchasing information.
A recent study released by the California Department of Education indicated one in five high school students in San Diego County will drop out with the statewide average being closer to one in four. In 2005, the state of California was ranked 49th for the number of adults with a high school diploma, and the California Postsecondary Education Commission has projected that by 2025 41 percent of all jobs in the state will require at least a bachelor’s degree, compared to 31 percent today.
“We’ve selected panelists to represent the viewpoints of educators and employers and who are authorities in their field,” said LNC Alumni Group Co-Chair Julie Wright of (W)right On Communications.
The panel will be moderated by Steve Kildoo, co-chair of the LNC Alumni Group and chair of the San Marcos Planning Commission.
Panelists include:
· Dr. Seth Bates, a professor in the College of Engineering at San Jose State University who is President of the California Industrial and Technology Education Association and Foundation;
· Wilma Owens, Dean of Career, Technical and Extended Education at Palomar College;
· Gary Moss, a labor market intelligence specialist with the San Diego Workforce Partnership; and
· Phil Blair, the president of Manpower Staffing -- San Diego’s fourth largest for-profit employer employing 4,000 San Diegans daily through its six branches.
